How many parshiot are there?

There are 54 weekly Torah portions (parshiot), covering the five books from Bereshit (Genesis 1:1) to Vezot Haberakhah (Deuteronomy 34:12). In most years some are read in doubled pairs so the cycle finishes in one year.

Why are some parshiot read together?

A Hebrew year has 50 to 54 available Shabbatot for the weekly reading, depending on how many festivals fall on a Saturday. When there are fewer Shabbatot than portions, certain fixed pairs (like Vayakhel-Pekudei) are combined so the annual cycle still finishes for Simchat Torah.
