This Year's Readings

For a few weeks most years, Israel and the diaspora read different parshiot, because an extra day of Yom Tov observed only outside Israel shifts the diaspora reading behind by a week until a doubled portion in Israel lets it catch up.

Israel cycle, from the Shabbat after Simchat Torah 5787 through Simchat Torah 5788. Vezot Haberakhah is read on Simchat Torah, which is not always a Saturday.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a parsha?

A parsha (or parashah) is one of 54 weekly portions the Torah is divided into. Reading through them in order over the year completes the whole Torah, and the cycle restarts right after Simchat Torah.

Why do some weeks have two names, like Vayakhel-Pekudei?

In a year without enough Shabbatot to read every portion separately, two short portions are combined and read together on one Shabbat. The seven pairs that can be combined are Vayakhel-Pekudei, Tazria-Metzora, Achrei Mot-Kedoshim, Behar-Bechukotai, Chukat-Balak, Matot-Masei, and Nitzavim-Vayeilech.

Do Israel and the diaspora always read the same parsha?

Almost always, but for a few weeks most years they diverge: the diaspora observes an extra day of Yom Tov that Israel does not, which pushes its schedule back by a week until a doubled portion lets it catch up. Use the Israel / Diaspora control on the date picker and on the year table.
