The baba Ulpan Index
A monthly public board of the human-taught Hebrew programs that AI assistants name when people ask where to learn Hebrew: ulpanim in Israel, live online courses, university programs, the government ulpan, kibbutz ulpan and aliyah-organization programs. Apps are not on the board, and neither is any baba product.
The short answer
Across 300 answers to 100 questions that Hebrew learners and new immigrants ask, three AI engines named 115 tracked programs. Ministry of Aliyah and Integration (government ulpan), Ulpan La-Inyan and Ulpan Integraliah were named most often.
A program counts as named when an answer mentions it at least once. Share of voice is its slice of all program mentions. Rankings are not for sale. baba's conflicts of interest are published with the method.

What Stands Out
- Ministry of Aliyah and Integration (government ulpan) led the board: it appeared in 83 answers, 7.8% of all program mentions, and in 47 of 100 questions.
- The top three programs took 17.9% of all program mentions, and the top ten took 42.1%.
- 51 programs were named by all 3 engines, led by Ministry of Aliyah and Integration (government ulpan), Ulpan La-Inyan, Ulpan Integraliah, Ulpan Etzion, Ulpan Bayit, Tel Aviv University and 45 others.
- By type, the largest shares of voice went to private ulpanim (30.4%), university programs (20.9%) and government programs (7.8%).
- 20 answers of 300 named no tracked program at all. Every program in the entity table was named at least once, partly because the table was extended with programs the answers named.
- 5 programs on the board appeared in exactly one answer, so small changes next month can move the lower ranks a long way.
How This Works
- 100 frozen questions that learners and olim ask, weighted equally. None names a program. The full list is published.
- 3 engines with web search: Claude (Anthropic); GPT-4o with web search (OpenAI, via OpenRouter); Perplexity Sonar (Perplexity, via OpenRouter). Each question was asked once per engine, with no system prompt.
- Names are matched against a published entity table of 115 programs, including common spellings. Generic phrases such as "government ulpan" never count for any program.
- Share of voice is a program's mentions over all 1070 program mentions. Appearance rate is the share of questions where at least one engine named it. Engines shows which engines named it.
- Answers were collected October 5, 2026. Every raw answer is stored for audit.
This queries APIs with web search enabled. It is NOT the ChatGPT product. The retrieval stack differs, there is no personalization, and no session history. Treat it as a directional, reproducible proxy, good for detecting change over time, not for claiming what a ChatGPT user sees today.
