Why it asks who is speaking

English has one word for “you.” Hebrew has four: את (a woman speaking to a woman or a man to a woman is the same word, אתה, אתן, אתם depending on who is addressed), and the verb that follows changes its ending to match. A translator that ignores this has to guess, and it guesses male by default more often than not, which is wrong exactly as often as the speaker or the listener is not a man.

That is why this page asks two short questions before it translates: who is speaking, and who is being spoken to. The Hebrew that comes back matches both, the way a person who actually knew the speaker and listener would write it.

Reading the transliteration

Every result includes a Latin-letter reading underneath the Hebrew, so a sentence can be spoken before the letters are familiar. It is a simple system (kh for כ, tz for צ), meant for saying the sentence out loud, not for spelling it back in Hebrew letters.
