The blessing

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has made us holy through His commandments and commanded us concerning the counting of the Omer.

What a night’s count sounds like

After the blessing, the count for day 33, Lag BaOmer, is said like this:

Today is 33 days, which are 4 weeks and 5 days of the Omer

How to count

Each night after nightfall, say the blessing, then name the day: for example, “Today is thirty-three days, which are four weeks and five days, of the Omer.” The count runs through both the day number and, from day seven on, the equivalent in weeks and days.

Each of the 49 days pairs two of the seven qualities above: this week’s quality first, then the day’s own quality within it, so day one of week two is “Chesed within Gevurah,” day two is “Gevurah within Gevurah,” and so on. If a full night and day pass with no count at all, most authorities hold the unbroken sequence is broken: counting continues on later nights, but without the blessing. Ask your rabbi if this happens to you.
