How the date is chosen

A bar or bat mitzvah date is not chosen; it arrives automatically on a child's 13th (boy) or 12th (girl) Hebrew birthday, the anniversary of birth by the Hebrew rather than the Gregorian calendar. From that day, Jewish tradition holds the young person accountable for the commandments, whether or not any ceremony takes place.

Because the Hebrew calendar's leap months shift the Gregorian date from year to year, this date rarely lands on the same Gregorian date as a Gregorian 13th birthday. This calculator converts the birth date to its Hebrew anniversary, then finds the Hebrew year in which the child turns the relevant age.

The celebration itself, including calling the child to the Torah for an aliyah, most often happens on the Shabbat on or immediately after the Hebrew birthday, so the calculator shows that Shabbat and its parsha as well.
