Eshet Khayil

This acrostic from Proverbs praises a capable partner and the work of the household. The first verses ask who can find such a person and describe trust, labor, and care. Sung in many homes on Friday night before kiddush.

אֵשֶׁת חַיִל מִי יִמְצָא וְרָחֹק מִפְּנִינִים מִכְרָהּ

eshet khayil mi yimtza verakhok mipeninim mikhrah

A woman of valor who can find? Her worth is far beyond rubies.

בָּטַח בָּהּ לֵב בַּעְלָהּ וְשָׁלָל לֹא יֶחְסָר

batakh bah lev ba'alah veshalal lo yekhsar

Her husband’s heart trusts in her, and he lacks no spoil.

גְּמָלַתְהוּ טוֹב וְלֹא רָע כֹּל יְמֵי חַיֶּיהָ

gemalathu tov velo ra kol yemei khayeha

She deals him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.

דָּרְשָׁה צֶמֶר וּפִשְׁתִּים וַתַּעַשׂ בְּחֵפֶץ כַּפֶּיהָ

dareshah tzemer ufishtim vata'as bekhefetz kapeiha

She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.

הָיְתָה כָּאֳנִיּוֹת סוֹחֵר מִמֶּרְחָק תָּבִיא לַחְמָהּ

hayetah ka'oniyot sokher mimerkhak tavi lakhmah

She is like the merchant ships; she brings her food from afar.

וַתָּקָם בְּעוֹד לַיְלָה וַתִּתֵּן טֶרֶף לְבֵיתָהּ וְחֹק לְנַעֲרֹתֶיהָ

vatakom be'od lailah vatiten teref leveitah vekhok lena'aroteiha

She rises while it is still night and gives food to her household, and a portion to her attendants.
