Hanukkah Candle Lighting

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו וְצִוָּנוּ לְהַדְלִיק נֵר שֶׁל חֲנֻכָּה

barukh atah adonai eloheinu melekh ha'olam asher kideshanu bemitzvotav vetzivanu lehadlik ner shel khanukah

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has made us holy with His commandments and commanded us to light the Hanukkah lamp.

Some Sephardi rites say “ner khanukah” without “shel.”

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם שֶׁעָשָׂה נִסִּים לַאֲבוֹתֵינוּ בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם בַּזְּמַן הַזֶּה

barukh atah adonai eloheinu melekh ha'olam she'asah nisim la'avoteinu bayamim hahem bazeman hazeh

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days, at this time.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם שֶׁהֶחֱיָנוּ וְקִיְּמָנוּ וְהִגִּיעָנוּ לַזְּמַן הַזֶּה

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has given us life, sustained us, and brought us to this time.

First night of Hanukkah only.

הַנֵּרוֹת הַלָּלוּ אֲנַחְנוּ מַדְלִיקִין עַל הַנִּסִּים וְעַל הַנִּפְלָאוֹת וְעַל הַתְּשׁוּעוֹת וְעַל הַמִּלְחָמוֹת

hanerot hallalu anakhnu madlikin al hanisim ve'al hanifla'ot ve'al hateshu'ot ve'al hamilkhamot

These lamps we light for the miracles, the wonders, the salvations, and the wars

Said after the lamps are lit, before Maoz Tzur in many homes.

שֶׁעָשִׂיתָ לַאֲבוֹתֵינוּ בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם בַּזְּמַן הַזֶּה עַל יְדֵי כֹּהֲנֶיךָ הַקְּדוֹשִׁים

she'asita la'avoteinu bayamim hahem bazeman hazeh al yedei kohanekha hakedoshim

that You performed for our ancestors in those days, at this time, through Your holy priests.

וְכָל שְׁמוֹנַת יְמֵי חֲנֻכָּה הַנֵּרוֹת הַלָּלוּ קֹדֶשׁ הֵם וְאֵין לָנוּ רְשׁוּת לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בָּהֶם אֶלָּא לִרְאוֹתָם בִּלְבָד

vekhol shemonat yemei khanukah hanerot hallalu kodesh hem ve'ein lanu reshut lehishtamesh bahem ela lir'otam bilvad

And throughout the eight days of Hanukkah these lamps are holy, and we have no permission to make use of them, only to look at them,

כְּדֵי לְהוֹדוֹת וּלְהַלֵּל לְשִׁמְךָ הַגָּדוֹל עַל נִסֶּיךָ וְעַל נִפְלְאוֹתֶיךָ וְעַל יְשׁוּעָתֶךָ

kedei lehodot ulehallel leshimkha hagadol al nisekha ve'al nifle'otekha ve'al yeshu'atekha

so as to give thanks and praise to Your great name for Your miracles, Your wonders, and Your salvation.
