What is a yahrzeit?
A yahrzeit is the anniversary of a death, marked on the Hebrew calendar rather than the Gregorian one. Because the Hebrew calendar is lunar with an added leap month, a yahrzeit does not fall on the same Gregorian date each year; it can move by several weeks. This calculator converts the Gregorian date of passing to its Hebrew date once, then finds that Hebrew date again in each following year.
The evening before the yahrzeit day is when many families light a 24-hour memorial candle, since the Hebrew day begins at sunset. The table below shows both: the yahrzeit day itself, and the evening before it.
Adar in a leap year
A Hebrew leap year has two months of Adar. When the original death fell in the single Adar of a regular year, custom differs on which Adar carries the yahrzeit in a leap year: Ashkenazi custom generally observes it in Adar I, Sephardi custom generally observes it in Adar II. This is a case where customs vary and a local rabbi should be asked.
