The short answer
Hebrew speaking practice means producing your own replies, not only recognising words on a screen. Start with a familiar situation, say a complete sentence, answer a follow-up and repeat one corrected phrase. Baba Learn supports that routine through conversations with Maya or David, explained corrections and saved review. Its private beta is for iPhone and Android, with English and transliteration available when you need help.
- Practise a real reply, then change one detail.
- Save useful phrases and bring them into another conversation.
Give yourself a question to answer
Reading a phrase and finding that phrase while someone waits are different experiences. Speaking practice gives you a chance to try the second one. Begin with a question you can answer from your own life, rather than a subject that requires unfamiliar vocabulary.
The example below uses simple statements about Saturday. Read the question, look away and answer. Then add one detail of your own. The sentences are practice examples, not a transcript from the app.
| Role | Hebrew | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Question | מה התוכניות לשבת? | What are the plans for Saturday? |
| Your answer | בשבת אני בבית. | On Saturday I am at home. |
| Follow-up | עם המשפחה? | With the family? |
| Your answer | כן, עם המשפחה. | Yes, with the family. |
Build a routine you can come back to
Keep the routine small enough to repeat and specific enough to notice what you practised. You do not need to cover every skill in one sitting. Choose one speaking situation and one phrase worth keeping.
Use these four steps with an AI tutor, a teacher or a willing conversation partner. You can also record your own answer first and compare it with a model before trying it in an exchange.
| Step | What to do | What to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Say | Answer a familiar question out loud. | A sentence that expresses your own idea. |
| Respond | Answer one follow-up question. | A detail you added without memorising it. |
| Repair | Look at one correction and say the phrase again. | The reason for the change. |
| Reuse | Bring that phrase into a different situation. | A word or pattern you can retrieve again. |
Practise the forms you need for yourself
In Hebrew, many words change with the person they refer to. For a present-tense statement about yourself, notice whether you need a masculine or feminine form. When you ask someone a question, the listener matters too.
Practise a whole phrase instead of an isolated ending. Say it with a place, a drink or a plan you would actually mention. These paired examples show the same meaning with different grammatical forms.
| Meaning | Masculine | Feminine |
|---|---|---|
| I live here. | אני גר פה. | אני גרה פה. |
| I am learning Hebrew. | אני לומד עברית. | אני לומדת עברית. |
| I am ready. | אני מוכן. | אני מוכנה. |
Choose prompts that lead to another sentence
A good prompt leaves room for a reply. After naming a food you like, say where you eat it. After mentioning a plan, say who is coming. That gives you practice connecting ideas as well as recalling words.
Start with one of these prompts and change it when it becomes too familiar. If you are stuck, use English or a suggested reply to keep the exchange moving, then revisit the missing phrase.
- Describe what you usually order at a café, then change the size or drink.
- Say where you live and ask where the other person lives.
- Explain a plan for the weekend and answer a follow-up about it.
- Rehearse asking an office to repeat a time or address.
- Tell a short story about something that happened today.
Make feedback part of the next attempt
In Baba Learn, a conversation with Maya or David can lead to explained corrections, a recap and phrases saved in My Cards. Fix Your Mistakes gives you a place to return to corrections rather than leaving them inside a finished conversation.
Pick one change you understand, say the corrected sentence, then make another sentence with the same pattern. Separate grammar practice from sound practice when that helps: a natural sentence can still contain a sound you want to work on.
Notice what you can do with less help
Look for concrete changes: you answer without opening the translation, ask a follow-up, recover when a word goes missing or reuse a phrase in a new setting. Those observations are more useful than treating one smooth conversation as proof of fluency.
An AI tutor can misunderstand speech or make a correction you should question. Baba Learn’s sound feedback does not assess word stress. Use recordings, teacher feedback and conversations with people to keep broadening the evidence you learn from.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I practise speaking Hebrew alone?
Answer familiar questions aloud, record a reply, compare it with an example and try again. An AI tutor can add follow-up questions and feedback so the practice includes responding as well as repeating.
What should I talk about in Hebrew?
Start with familiar situations: ordering a drink, describing your day, meeting someone or making a plan. Add one follow-up so you practise connecting ideas.
Should I memorise complete sentences?
Useful phrases give you a starting point. Change the person, place or object and use the phrase in a new exchange so you also practise producing your own reply.
What if I understand Hebrew but freeze when speaking?
Reduce the task to one familiar reply and allow yourself help. In Baba Learn you can reveal English or transliteration, ask How Do I Say, or use a suggested reply before trying the phrase again.
How do I know whether I am improving?
Notice specific tasks you can complete with less support, such as answering a follow-up or reusing a corrected phrase. A teacher can help assess broader progress; one app score or conversation cannot establish your overall proficiency.
