- Maya
- The Flydubai copilot accused of plotting to crash a jet into Ben Gurion Airport allegedly started planning nine years ago.
- Daniel
- And the Arab Joint List says it's open to backing a government without Benjamin Netanyahu, on its own terms.
- Maya
- This is Good Morning, Israel from baba News. It's Sunday, October eleventh. I'm Maya.
- Daniel
- And I'm Daniel.
- Maya
- Yesterday we told you the Emirates confirmed the target was Ben Gurion, Israel's main international airport. What's new?
- Daniel
- The timeline, and the man. The copilot is Hammam al Hammami, and he's from Oman. According to the U A E, he allegedly began planning this nine eleven inspired attack back in twenty seventeen.
- Maya
- Twenty seventeen. So this wasn't a sudden snap in a cockpit.
- Daniel
- No. He allegedly started while he was living in Australia, and gathered intelligence during his work trips.
- Maya
- Work trips. As a pilot.
- Daniel
- Right. Which is exactly what makes it so disturbing. His job gave him access, and according to the allegations, he used it to scout a terror attack on Israelis.
- Maya
- Does he say anyone helped him?
- Daniel
- He claims he acted alone. The U A E isn't taking his word for it. It's investigating possible accomplices.
- Maya
- And the Emirates have promised what, exactly?
- Daniel
- A severe punishment. And, notably, they acknowledged a failure. They admit they didn't detect his extremism.
- Maya
- That's rare. An airline's home country saying, we missed it.
- Daniel
- It is. And it feeds straight into the question Israel has been asking all along, about how foreign crews flying into Ben Gurion get vetted.
- Maya
- So the accomplice investigation is the thread to follow.
- Daniel
- Exactly. If he really was alone for nine years, that's one problem. If he wasn't, it's a much bigger one.
- Maya
- Now a terrible story out of Beer Sheva, the largest city in Israel's southern Negev desert.
- Daniel
- A woman in her forties was found stabbed in her home. She was taken to Soroka Medical Center, the main hospital in the south, and later died.
- Maya
- And police have made an arrest.
- Daniel
- Her husband, also in his forties, is suspected of murder.
- Maya
- Was anyone else home?
- Daniel
- Their five year old son was in the apartment when it happened.
- Maya
- That's heartbreaking.
- Daniel
- It is. Police say there were no previous domestic violence calls to that home. The motive and circumstances are still under investigation.
- Maya
- Which is often the hardest part of these cases. No warning anyone saw.
- Daniel
- Right, and it's why advocates in Israel keep pushing for earlier ways to spot danger inside families.
- Maya
- Politics. Sixteen days to the election, and the Joint List just moved a piece on the board.
- Daniel
- The Joint List is an alliance of Arab parties in the Knesset, Israel's parliament. Its head, Yousef Jabareen, says the party is willing to support an alternative government to Prime Minister Netanyahu.
- Maya
- Willing, with conditions.
- Daniel
- Clear ones, he says. Negotiations would have to address Arab community priorities, and top of the list is fighting crime and violence in Arab towns.
- Maya
- Which is a real crisis there.
- Daniel
- It's one of the biggest issues for Arab Israelis. But Jabareen also said there are core principles the party won't compromise on, including its opposition to settlements and to the Nation State Law.
- Maya
- Remind people what that law is.
- Daniel
- It's a twenty eighteen Basic Law defining Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people. Arab parties have opposed it from the start.
- Maya
- So why does this matter for the opposition?
- Daniel
- Because a lot of the anti Netanyahu bloc doesn't want to depend on Arab parties. An open offer forces them to answer the question.
- Maya
- And Likud gets to ask it loudly for two weeks.
- Daniel
- Exactly. It could become a key election issue.
- Maya
- Now a claim about Washington and Iran. Wait, who's reporting this?
- Daniel
- Israeli journalist Ben Caspit. According to his report, the Trump administration urged Israel to strike Iran before the U S midterm elections.
- Maya
- Why the timing?
- Daniel
- According to the report, Washington wanted to avoid political risk. And the push was reportedly linked to Iran rebuilding its drone and missile production.
- Maya
- So Iran's restocking, and someone wanted it dealt with before November.
- Daniel
- That's the claim. And according to the same report, I D F Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir warned that a strike could lead to Israel's own elections being postponed.
- Maya
- Which, sixteen days out, would be enormous.
- Daniel
- Right. The report says the initiative has since been halted. And Prime Minister Netanyahu's own position isn't clear.
- Maya
- The thing nobody disputes is that Iran is rebuilding.
- Daniel
- Exactly. Whatever happened in those conversations, that threat to Israel hasn't gone away.
- Maya
- To Ramallah. Yesterday we told you Palestinian elections were slipping. Now there's a date.
- Daniel
- Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, issued a decree. The legislative elections set for November twenty eighth are now pushed to September eleventh, twenty twenty seven.
- Maya
- Nearly a year.
- Daniel
- And they'll be combined with presidential elections.
- Maya
- What reason did he give?
- Daniel
- The Palestinian Authority blames Israeli security measures in the West Bank and Gaza, and says conditions for a fair vote aren't there.
- Maya
- Blaming Israel. Convenient.
- Daniel
- That's their claim. And plenty of Palestinians don't buy it. Mohammed Dahlan, a former senior Fatah official and a longtime rival of Abbas, called the postponement a blatant crime.
- Maya
- Strong words from inside the house.
- Daniel
- Very. And the widely held reading is that Fatah, the party that runs the Palestinian Authority, is trying to avoid losing.
- Maya
- Losing to whom?
- Daniel
- Partly to a possible joint list with Hamas, which Dahlan had been working to put together.
- Maya
- So the real obstacle to this election isn't the I D F. It's the prospect of Hamas winning at the ballot box.
- Daniel
- That's the point. And for Israel, a vote that hands the terrorist organization Hamas more power in the West Bank is precisely the danger.
- Maya
- Let's do a quick round. Money first.
- Daniel
- Israel's Finance Ministry is exploring a capital gains tax exemption of up to forty five million shekels for tech founders and investors.
- Maya
- To keep them from leaving.
- Daniel
- Right. It's inspired by American tax incentives. The worry is Israeli tech companies expanding abroad, and that hits growth and exports.
- Maya
- Tech is basically the engine.
- Daniel
- It is. And there's also talk of changing how employee stock options are taxed.
- Maya
- Next, Central America.
- Daniel
- An earthquake hit Panama on Friday evening. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar told the Foreign Ministry and the Israeli embassy in Panama to coordinate emergency aid.
- Maya
- What's being sent?
- Daniel
- Drinking water and food. It's being handed out with Panamanian authorities in places like Playa Venao, where infrastructure is damaged and water is short.
- Maya
- Water is what you need first.
- Daniel
- Exactly.
- Maya
- And Benny Gantz is relaunching.
- Daniel
- Gantz leads National Unity, a centrist party. It's started a new campaign for the October twenty seventh election, called We Choose Unity and Save the State.
- Maya
- Even though the polls have it below the threshold.
- Daniel
- Right. That's the minimum vote share a party needs to get into the Knesset at all.
- Maya
- How does he answer that?
- Daniel
- He points to past comebacks and his own internal polling. The campaign targets undecided voters.
- Maya
- A unity slogan from a party fighting to survive.
- Daniel
- He'd say that's exactly why it needs unity.
- Maya
- Something to watch today?
- Daniel
- The rest of the opposition. Watch whether its leaders accept or reject the Joint List's offer, because their answer could shape the last two weeks of this campaign.
- Maya
- Follow Good Morning, Israel so tomorrow's episode is waiting for you.
- Daniel
- See you tomorrow morning.
