Test 2: does the correction preserve your meaning?
Type this original practice sentence:
אני גר ב תל אביב.
Ani gar be-Tel Aviv.
I live in Tel Aviv, said by a man.
The writing issue is the space after ב. A corrected version is אני גר בתל אביב. The prefix ב attaches to the following word; the city name תל אביב still contains its ordinary space.
Ask: “Show the smallest correction and explain it in English.” Then ask for the same meaning from a woman: אני גרה בתל אביב (ani gara be-Tel Aviv).
Check that the tutor keeps the city, the meaning and the person you requested. A longer, more polished sentence is not necessarily the right correction if it changes what you meant. You can accept a useful alternative while still asking which specific part of your original needed work.
A single correction can contain several changes. If you do not understand them, ask for one change at a time and verify it in a grammar reference or with a fluent speaker.
Test 3: can you continue when you need help?
Ask a short question in Hebrew, answer it and then say לא הבנתי (lo hevanti, “I did not understand”). Try these requests:
- אפשר שוב, בבקשה? (efshar shuv, bevakasha?): “Could you say that again, please?”
- קצת יותר לאט (ktsat yoter le-at): “A little more slowly.”
- איך אומרים “I need help” בעברית? (eikh omrim “I need help” be-ivrit?): “How do you say ‘I need help’ in Hebrew?”
Observe the response. Does it repeat the useful line, reduce the pace or explain without abandoning the conversation? If you ask for a suggested reply, can you see what you are about to say?
Also check whether you can pause or type when speaking is inconvenient. Typing can practise sentence structure; it does not assess your spoken delivery. Confirm which features work inside the actual Hebrew mode rather than assuming every advertised control is available in every lesson.
Test 4: separate words heard from sounds assessed
A speech transcript shows the words a recognizer selected. It can be helpful, but a correct transcript does not prove that every consonant, vowel or stress pattern was correct. Conversely, an unexpected transcript does not tell you by itself which sound caused the problem.
Ask the provider what its feedback measures. Does it compare a recording with a target phrase, flag particular sounds, comment on fluency or merely show recognized words? Does the same feature support Hebrew? What are its known limitations?
Read the feedback description before relying on a number or a green mark. A casual sample is not a controlled pronunciation study. For an important pronunciation question, compare with a teacher or fluent speaker and allow for variation among Hebrew accents.
baba Learn’s current sound feedback can flag sounds it heard differently, but it can make mistakes and does not assess word stress. Conversation feedback and repeat-after-a-target drills use different criteria. Other products may measure different things, so check each one separately.
Test 5: find one useful correction again
Save one phrase you want to use. Leave the exercise, then try to find it in the app’s review area. Check whether you can see the original sentence, the corrected version and the explanation you need.
Try the phrase in another context: change Tel Aviv to Haifa or change the grammatical subject. A review workflow is more useful when you understand the pattern as well as recognize the saved answer. This is a practice suggestion, not a promise that repeating a phrase a fixed number of times makes it permanent.
Ask what the app remembers, what you can view or delete and how long recordings are retained. Avoid sharing private family, health or work details merely to test personalization. An invented scenario is enough to check the workflow.

Frequently asked questions
Does a correct transcript prove my Hebrew pronunciation was correct?
No. A transcript shows the words a recognizer selected. Ask what sound feedback measures and which Hebrew features it supports. A casual sample does not establish comparative accuracy.
How do I check Hebrew gender handling?
State the intended subject and grammatical address, ask for a short example, then change the subject. Check whether the explanation follows the person described rather than assuming every form follows the speaker.
What should I check before paying?
Confirm Hebrew voice access, the current lesson or AI allowance, local price, renewal and cancellation terms, and which saved reviews remain accessible.
Is baba Learn publicly available?
baba Learn is in private beta on iPhone and Android. Its current interface is English. Join the waitlist on the app page; AI usage limits apply.
