Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Hebrew turn into question marks or boxes sometimes?
If the program that first saved the text used an encoding that cannot represent Hebrew (or had no font for it) and substituted "?" or a box glyph, that replacement happened before you ever saw the text, and no decoder can invent the original bytes back.
What is mojibake?
Mojibake is text that was encoded correctly but decoded with the wrong character set: the bytes are all still there, only misread. That is the case this tool actually fixes, by trying the decodings that produce the most valid Hebrew.
