How acronyms work in Hebrew
An acronym takes the first letter of each word and puts the double mark ״ before the last one. צה״ל is צבא ההגנה לישראל, the Israel Defense Forces. Because the marks are dropped in texting, the decoder matches with or without them.
Many acronyms are read as words with vowels supplied by habit: tzahal, mankal, sofash, bagatz. They then behave like nouns, take the definite article and a plural, and get a prefix stuck to the front. A single mark ׳ is something else: an abbreviation of one word, like מיל׳ for מילואים.
