Shavuot joins the wheat harvest to the memory of the Torah given at Sinai. The all-night Tikkun Leil Shavuot study session was instituted by the 16th-century kabbalists of Safed; dairy foods prevail across communities; the Aramaic hymn Akdamut opens the Ashkenazi Torah reading. Handle with care: Shavuot 1941 is also the date of the Farhud in Baghdad — the overlap is presented with restraint in the Baghdad→Ramat Gan route.
