Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Yiddish produced a world-class literature: Mendele Mocher Sforim’s satires, Sholem Aleichem’s Tevye stories, and Y.L. Peretz’s modernist tales — written across Ukraine and Poland for the largest Jewish vernacular audience in history.
