Sholem Aleichem — Sholem Rabinovich (1859–1916)

With Mendele and Peretz, the classic trio of Yiddish literature — the creator of Tevye the Dairyman.

Sholem Rabinovich, writing as Sholem Aleichem, stood with Mendele Mocher Sforim and Y.L. Peretz as the classic trio of Yiddish literature.

His Tevye the Dairyman stories — a father arguing with God and his daughters in the Russian Empire’s Pale — became Fiddler on the Roof (1964 musical, 1971 film) and the world’s best-known Yiddish fiction. He died in New York in 1916; his funeral was one of the largest in the city’s history.
