Nachmanides — Ramban (1194–1270)

Girona’s Talmudist-kabbalist who defended Judaism at the 1263 Barcelona Disputation and rebuilt Jerusalem’s ruined Jewish life.

Moses ben Nachman of Girona was Catalonia’s great Talmudist and an early master of Kabbalah. Ordered to defend Judaism at the Barcelona Disputation of 1263, he spoke so forcefully that he was banished; in 1267 he reached Acre and then Jerusalem, where — in the city’s words of his own letter, ruined — he re-established Jewish communal life, remembered by tradition as a father of its settlement.

His Torah commentary joins plain sense and Kabbalah and is studied alongside Rashi’s to this day.
