Maimonides — Rambam (1138–1204)

Córdoba-born codifier, philosopher, and physician — the Mishneh Torah and the Guide of the Perplexed — head of Egyptian Jewry.

Moses ben Maimon was born in Córdoba, fled Almohad persecution through Morocco and the Land of Israel, and settled in Fustat (Cairo), where he served as physician to the Ayyubid court and ra’is al-yahud — head of Egyptian Jewry. His Mishneh Torah codified all of Jewish law in lucid Hebrew; his Guide of the Perplexed, written in Judeo-Arabic, set the agenda of Jewish philosophy for centuries.

By tradition his tomb is in Tiberias.
