Joseph Karo compiled the Shulchan Aruch ("Set Table") in Safed, and its Venice printing of 1565 made it the working code of Jewish law. When Moses Isserles (the Rema) added Ashkenazi glosses in Kraków in the 1570s, the book became something rarer: a Sephardi framework and an Ashkenazi commentary bound in one volume — a dialogue between two diasporas on every page.
