What is Judeo-Italian?

Judeo-Italian is not one variety but two types: Literary Judeo-Italian (Hebrew-character texts, 1200–1700) and spoken local dialects — Judeo-Roman, Judeo-Venetian, Judeo-Livornese (Bagitto), Judeo-Mantuan, Judeo-Piedmontese, and more (JLP/Rubin). Jews have lived in Italy since possibly the 2nd century BCE; Rome hosts the oldest and largest community, with Venice, Livorno, Ferrara, Mantua, and Piedmont, plus Venetian-ruled Corfu. Hebrew loans were fully nativized into Italian morphology (maḥlare "to forgive" < מחל; ahlare "to eat" < אכל), and the phonology was distinctive — e.g., retention of l after b/f/k/p (clamare vs Italian chiamare) — differing from Christian neighbors’ dialects in lexicon, morphology, and pronunciation. The oldest Judeo-Italian evidence is 150+ glosses in the 1072/73 "Parma A" Mishnah manuscript (also the oldest evidence of the Salentino dialect); the oldest original work is the Tisha B’Av elegy "La ienti de Zion" (12th–13th c.); and the first attested use of the word "pizza" in Italian appears in Hebrew letters (פיצה) in a 14th-century glossary to Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah. Yiddish "bentshn" (to bless) derives from Judeo-Italian "benedice," carried north by Jews migrating from Italy. Primo Levi’s The Periodic Table (1975) contains a chapter using Judeo-Piedmontese; the poets Crescenzo del Monte (Judeo-Roman) and Guido Bedarida (Judeo-Livornese) kept the dialects literary into the 20th century. Extinct per JLP (2023: 0 speakers) — but postvernacular memory (Rome theater productions) is real and represented here, labeled. A language, not a dialect of Hebrew: Judeo-Italian is a set of Romance dialects descended from Latin via Italian — its Hebrew component is borrowed vocabulary, not ancestry.
