Who were they, and what did they live through?
Persian Jewry traces to the Babylonian exile and the Esther traditions of Hamadan; Judeo-Persian literature (Shahin of Shiraz) flourished from the 14th century. Tehran's community grew from the Safavid-era mahalleh into the Pahlavi-era capital of Iranian Jewish life, tens of thousands by 1978 (Iran total ~85,000-100,000).
The 1979 revolution triggered a mass exodus to Israel and the US (the "Tehrangeles" diaspora), but a substantial community stayed: today ~8,000-20,000 in Tehran (contested counts), with synagogues, kosher institutions, and a reserved Jewish seat in parliament, one of the largest Jewish communities in the Muslim world, functioning with caution.
