Who were they, and what did they live through?
The Bene Israel, by community tradition shipwreck survivors who settled the Konkan coast, moved into Bombay from the 18th century, building the Gate of Mercy synagogue (1796) and adopting Marathi as their vernacular (Judeo-Marathi is outside the 12-canon, noted in prose). From 1832, David Sassoon's Baghdadi mercantile house made Bombay the eastern anchor of the Iraq-India trading world, endowing the Magen David (Byculla; cornerstone 1857, completed 1861) and Knesset Eliyahoo (1884) synagogues, schools, and docks.
A third, tiny Cochini stream linked Bombay to Kerala. At Indian independence ~20,000-25,000 Jews lived in India, mostly in Bombay; most made aliyah by the 1970s.
Today ~3,500-5,000 remain across India, with Mumbai's restored synagogues as national landmarks, the 2008 attacks on the city's Chabad center are documented memory.
