Who were they — and what did they live through?

Bavarian Jewish merchants helped found modern LA in the 1850s; the movie industry's Jewish studio era made the city a byword of 20th-century Jewish America. Fairfax Avenue grew a Yiddish neighborhood; post-1979, Iranian Jews built "Tehrangeles" in Westwood and Beverly Hills - the largest Persian-Jewish diaspora.

Russian and Israeli streams followed. Today 564,700 Jews by the 2021 community study (up ~9% from 519,151 in the 1997 survey) live across the basin, with the Skirball Cultural Center, Wilshire Boulevard Temple (1929), and a Persian-Jewish institutional world as landmarks.
