Who were they — and what did they live through?
Jews lived in Constantinople long before 1453; after the Ottoman conquest, Sultan Bayezid II welcomed the 1492 Spanish exiles, who organized into self-governing "nations" (Safarad, Sicilia, Aragon...) and made Istanbul a Ladino metropolis. The 1660s Sabbatai Zevi convulsion centered here; so did the empire's great Hebrew printing.
The republican era brought the 1942 Varlik Vergisi wealth tax and the 1955 pogrom - pressures that drove steady emigration to Israel. Today ~14,000-17,000 Jews (contested counts) remain, Turkey's largest community, sustaining synagogues, schools, the Salom newspaper (a Ladino page until recently), and a visible Ladino heritage revival.
