Who were they, and what did they live through?
A Jewish town is documented in Haifa since Talmudic times; the modern community grew with the deep-water port and the Technion (founded 1912), whose 1913 "language war", Hebrew versus German as the language of instruction, ended in Hebrew's decisive victory. Mandate-era Haifa was the principal port of clandestine aliyah (the Exodus affair, 1947); after 1948 it absorbed successive aliyot into a mixed Arab-Jewish city of ~285,000 (CBS, mid-2022).
The Haifa metropolitan area holds ~707,000 Jews (DellaPergola, AJYB 2021 metro table), with the Technion and University of Haifa as communal anchors.
