# What yalla means

Yalla is Israeli slang borrowed from Arabic that means let's go, come on or hurry up, and baba's slang dictionary also lists yalla as a way to signal that a conversation is ending. In Hebrew it is written יאללה. Yalla is one of the Israeli slang terms you hear in daily use across the country, said by speakers of every background, in every register short of formal writing.

## Key facts
| Fact | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Hebrew | יאללה |
| Transliteration | yalla |
| Origin | Arabic |
| Core meaning | Let's go, come on, hurry up |
| Second use | Wrapping up a conversation or a phone call |
| Register | Spoken and informal, not used in formal writing |

## When do Israelis actually say yalla?
Yalla appears in four recurring situations, and the situation rather than the word carries the meaning.

| Hebrew | Transliteration | English | Situation |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| יאללה, בוא | yalla, bo | Come on, let's go | Getting someone moving |
| יאללה, נלך | yalla, nelech | Alright, let's head off | Proposing to leave together |
| יאללה, מהר | yalla, maher | Come on, quickly | Pressing someone who is slow |
| יאללה ביי | yalla bye | Alright, bye | Ending a call or a conversation |

Yalla is also used alone as a full response. Said on its own it means roughly "fine, agreed, let's do it", and it can close a negotiation without any other word.

## Does yalla change depending on who you are speaking to?
Yalla itself does not change form. The verb after it does, because Hebrew imperatives agree with the listener's gender and number.

| Said to | Hebrew | Transliteration |
| --- | --- | --- |
| One man | יאללה, בוא | yalla, bo |
| One woman | יאללה, בואי | yalla, boi |
| A group | יאללה, בואו | yalla, bou |

Getting this wrong is the most audible mistake a learner makes with yalla, because the word itself is easy and the verb after it is not.

## What does yalla bye mean?
יאללה ביי (yalla bye) is the standard way to end a phone call in Israel, and it signals that the conversation is finished rather than that anyone is going anywhere. The English word "bye" was absorbed into Israeli speech and pairs with yalla so routinely that the two function as a single expression.

Yalla bye is friendly by default. It can also be used to cut a conversation short, and in that case the shortness is the signal, not the words.

## Does tone change what yalla means?
Yes, and tone is the main thing that separates the readings. Said warmly, yalla is encouraging and means let's get going together. Said sharply and repeated, יאללה, יאללה (yalla, yalla) is impatient and means hurry up. Said flatly at the end of a sentence, yalla is simply a full stop on the conversation.

Written text strips the tone out, which is why yalla in a message is ambiguous in a way it never is in speech. Context in the surrounding sentence is what an accurate translation has to use, and baba translates Israeli slang by meaning rather than word by word.

## Frequently asked questions
### Is yalla a Hebrew word or an Arabic word?
Yalla comes from Arabic and was absorbed into spoken Israeli Hebrew, where it is now completely ordinary. Israelis of every background use it without thinking of it as a loanword. It is written in Hebrew letters as יאללה.

### Can I say yalla at work or to someone older than me?
Yalla is informal but not rude, and it is common in Israeli workplaces among colleagues. Israeli register is generally more direct than English-speaking norms, so yalla in a meeting is unremarkable. It still does not belong in formal writing, a legal document or an official letter.

### What is the difference between yalla and kadima?
Both push things forward. קדימה (kadima) literally means "forward" and is more directional, closer to "let's move" or "go on". Yalla is broader and covers agreement and conversation-ending as well as movement.

### How do I pronounce yalla?
Two syllables, YA-la, with the stress on the first and a doubled l held slightly longer than in English. The initial y is the same sound as in "yes". baba includes Hebrew text-to-speech if you want to hear it read aloud.

## What baba does not do
- Machine translation of Hebrew slang depends on context that a short message may not carry, and yalla on its own in a text message is exactly that case.
- baba is a translation tool, not a Hebrew course, and using baba will not by itself make you fluent.
- The free tier is 2,500 characters per month, which is enough for a handful of messages a week and not enough for documents.
