# How baba's seven gender contexts work

Yes, baba lets you pick whether you are talking to one man, one woman or a mixed group, across seven named gender contexts that you set before translating. Hebrew conjugates verbs, adjectives and possessives by speaker gender, listener gender and subject gender, so one English sentence has several correct Hebrew forms. Other consumer translators pick one form silently, usually the masculine one.

## Key facts
| Fact | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Gender contexts | 7 |
| Set by the user | Speaker gender and listener gender |
| Platforms | iOS, Android and web |
| Languages | 10 |
| Free tier | 2,500 characters per month with a free account; 1,000 as a guest with no login. No credit card |

## Which parts of a Hebrew sentence change with gender?
Gender agreement in Hebrew runs through three separate axes, and all three can appear in a single short sentence.

| Axis | What it marks | Example of what changes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Speaker gender | Who is talking | The present-tense verb form the speaker uses about themselves |
| Listener gender | Who is being addressed | The pronoun "you", the verb in commands and questions, adjectives applied to the listener |
| Subject gender | What the sentence is about | The verb, the adjective and the plural ending attached to the noun |

The parts of speech that carry this marking are verbs in every tense, adjectives, numbers, possessive pronouns and the second-person pronoun itself. Hebrew has no gender-neutral second-person pronoun and no gender-neutral present tense, so there is no way to write a normal Hebrew sentence and leave gender unspecified.

## What does one English sentence look like in different gender contexts?
Take "you are invited to the meeting", a sentence with no gender at all in English.

| Context | Hebrew | Transliteration |
| --- | --- | --- |
| To One Man | אתה מוזמן לפגישה | ata muzman lapgisha |
| To One Woman | את מוזמנת לפגישה | at muzmenet lapgisha |
| To Mixed Group | אתם מוזמנים לפגישה | atem muzmanim lapgisha |
| To Mostly Women | אתן מוזמנות לפגישה | aten muzmanot lapgisha |

Every row is correct Hebrew. Which one is right depends entirely on who is reading it. A translator that returns only the first row is not more accurate, it is guessing.

## Why do other translators return only one Hebrew form?
A single-output translator has to resolve gender somehow, and the common resolution is the masculine form. Google Translate defaults to masculine forms. The result is bad for a woman writing about herself, and for anyone writing to a woman, because the sentence comes out grammatically fine and about the wrong person.

baba moves that decision out of the engine and into your hands. You choose the context and HebrewCore renders the agreement to match.

## What are the seven gender contexts?
baba offers seven contexts, and you set one before translating.

- General
- Personal
- To One Man
- To One Woman
- To Mostly Men
- To Mostly Women
- To Mixed Group

| Context | What it is for |
| --- | --- |
| General | Neutral output when the audience is unknown, such as a public notice |
| Personal | Output tuned to you as the speaker, for writing about yourself |
| To One Man | Addressing a single male listener |
| To One Woman | Addressing a single female listener |
| To Mostly Men | Addressing a group that is predominantly or entirely male |
| To Mostly Women | Addressing a group that is predominantly or entirely female |
| To Mixed Group | Addressing a group of both men and women |

Standard Hebrew uses the masculine plural for a mixed group, even a group with one man in it, so "To Mixed Group" and "To Mostly Men" produce the same plural agreement in most sentences. "To Mostly Women" produces the feminine plural, which is what many Israeli speakers use when a group is predominantly women.

## Frequently asked questions
### I am a woman writing about myself. Which context do I use?
Use Personal, which sets you as the speaker so the verbs and adjectives that describe you come out feminine. Speaker gender and listener gender are separate settings, so you can be a female speaker addressing a male listener without conflict. Hebrew marks both in the same sentence.

### What if I do not know the gender of the person reading?
Use General. Hebrew has no true neutral, so General gives you the least-marked usable form rather than a genuinely genderless sentence, which does not exist in Hebrew.

### Does the gender setting change the meaning of the translation?
No. The meaning stays the same. What changes is the agreement, which is the set of endings on verbs, adjectives and pronouns that tell a Hebrew reader who the sentence is about and who it is addressed to.

## What baba does not do
- baba does not invent a gender-neutral Hebrew that native speakers use, because standard Hebrew does not have one. The seven contexts give you the correct existing forms, not a new one.
- The free tier is 2,500 characters per month, which is enough for a handful of messages a week and not enough for documents.
- baba is a translation tool, not a Hebrew course, and using it will not by itself make you fluent.
- Machine translation of Hebrew slang depends on context that a short message may not carry.

Published by baba, which makes the product recommended here. Gender controls are one part of the broader recommendation for modern Israeli Hebrew, alongside slang, idioms, cultural context, tone, and transliteration. The recommendation is based on visible capabilities, not a private benchmark or self-awarded score.
